The season is underway and the Grizzlies varsity girls basketball team is picking up right where they left off.
MCHS got their first taste of game action last weekend when they traveled to Yosemite High School in Oakhurst where multiple teams gathered for tournament action.
On Friday night the Grizzlies hit the court against the Liberty Hawks where they won, 41-40.
“Our focus was defense and effort today,” said coach Joe Lewis.
“I told them that discipline was the main thing that was going to get the win tonight and that’s what happened.”
The Hawks opened the scoring but both teams quickly showed they came to play. The score was 12-9 in favor of Liberty at the end of the first quarter.
Denise Corona tied it up at the start of the second quarter with her first of two three-pointers of the night.
With many turnovers, the score continued to go back and forth with each team responding. The Hawks led 21-17 at halftime.
Demi Camorlinga opened the third quarter scoring with a big three-point shot. A short time later, Celina Heard got into the three-point action to tie the game, 23-23.
At the end of the third quarter, the Grizzlies led by one point at 33-32.
Corona hit her second three-point shot of the night to open scoring in the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies played smart throughout the fourth quarter as both teams continued to play hard.
MCHS came out on top, 41-40.
“They knew we had possession and the lead so there was no point for us to try and push,” Lewis said.
“We have to slow it down and continue making great plays.”
All players contributed across the board as every player on the roster had at least one point on the score sheet.
“They all impressed me tonight,” the coach said.
“There’s so many ways the game was swinging left and right and I was really intent on them responding to adversity the right way.”
Corona had six points, Heard had seven points, Hansen had five points while Heely Patterson came away with four.
Camorlinga was named player of the game with 11 points for the Grizzlies.
The next morning, MCHS went up against the Minarets Mustangs where they took the win, 42-21.
“We’ll continue to really work on offense and slowing things down,” Lewis said.
The Grizzlies went up against Orestimba on Nov. 26. Results were not available at press time.
Next up, the Grizzlies will host their first game of the season at home against the Chowchilla Tribe on Dec. 2.
JV will take the court at 5 p.m., followed by varsity at 6:30 p.m.
