The Big Valley Christian Lions were the visiting volleyball team at Mariposa County High School on Sept. 2.

JV continues to shine as they won their game 2-1.

It’s nice to play good teams like that,” said JV coach Debbie Leonard.

It’s fun to play tough competition because that’s how we get better.

The JV team is continuing to put in the work to sharpen their skills.

We’re working on our defense and trying to get a little bit faster,” Leonard explained.

We’re also working on hitting and running offense as opposed to just hitting the ball. We want to know were the ball is going.

After JV won their game over BVC, the varsity team took the court.

The Lions may have won 3-2 against the Grizzlies, but the varsity team continued making adjustments and battling until the end.

Having lost to BVC once already this season, the varsity squad showed improvement.

This game was much more competitive,” said coach Holly Earling.

BVC took the first set 25-15 along with the second set 25-22.

The Grizzlies were able to win the third set 25-19 along with the fourth set 25-20.

The Lions shut the door in the fifth set with a score of 15-12, completing the win three sets to two.

“We played defense really well, particularly Mia (Hansen) and Abby (Beery). Abby’s serve receive has come a long way and Mia was just in good positions most of the night.

Serving has been a focal point for the Grizzlies this season.

We served pretty well. That’s been a focus for us this year,” Earling said.

Serving well helps to set up our defense. Kylie Williams served really well for us that game.

With only three seniors this year, the Grizzlies have a young team this season.

This is a good group,” Earling said.

We have a fairly young team this season but they’ve all meshed really well together. I’m really happy with how they’ve started the season.

The varsity team attended a tournament at Golden Valley over Sept. 5-6.

The Grizzlies took a loss against Buhach Colony 2-1 to start the weekend.

They bounced back against Pittman winning 2-1 followed by a 2-0 win against Livingston.

MCHS won all three of their matches on Sept. 6.

The Grizzlies topped Tokay, Modesto and Edison — winning each game 2-0.

Both JV and varsity traveled to Delhi to take on the Hawks on Sept. 8.

Results were not available at press time.

The Grizzlies hosted Gustine at MCHS on Sept. 10.

Results were not available at press time.

Next up, the Grizzlies will take on the Badgers at Yosemite on Sept. 11.

JV is scheduled to play at 5 p.m. followed by varsity at 6 p.m.
