Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6042 will be hosting the community’s annual Memorial Day Services starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, at the Mariposa Cemetery near the intersection of Highways 140 and 49 North.
Members of the VFW guard, organized by the Keith M. Bertken Post, will likely fire a memorial gun salute at the event.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday that falls on the last Monday in May. The post observes the holiday the Saturday before Memorial Day, to let more people take part.
It was originally known as Decoration Day — when family members of the Union and Confederate Civil War dead honored soldiers of the conflict — which claimed more causalities than any other in the nation’s history, according to the county historian.

Interestingly, multiple Civil War veterans, likely including Confederate soldiers, today rest in the local cemetery.
Everyone is invited to attend the event.
