As winter sports wind down to the last couple games of the regular season, Mariposa County High School soccer has seen some highs and lows this season.
Girls soccer
The girls team has had a rough patch as they traveled to Stone Ridge Christian to take on the Knights on Feb. 2.
Stone Ridge handed the Grizzlies a 6-0 loss.
MCHS had shots on goal from Kelsea Coder (1), Whitney Marcis (7), Juniper Helling (7), Alicia Garcia (6) and Zoe Johnson (1) but the Grizzlies couldn’t seem to put the ball in the net.
On Feb. 6, the rough patch continued as MCHS took a loss against Delhi with a final score of 4-0.
Delhi’s Yamileet Diaz had a night with three goals while Marielle Segovia captured one.
After falling to Delhi, the Grizzlies held a record of 4-6-1 which left them standing in fourth place in the Southern League.
The Grizzlies played their final game of the regular season on the road against Denair on Feb. 10.
Results as well as playoff information were not available at press time.
Boys soccer
The Grizzlies boys varsity soccer team traveled to Stone Ridge Christian on Feb. 2 were they pulled out a win over the Knights 2-1.
Jhovany Marquez had one goal and one assist while Bradley Southwood also had a goal.
Mason Rivera had four saves on the evening.
On Feb. 6, the Grizzlies had an away game against Delhi where they were blown out 7-0.
“The guys definitely tried,” said coach Miguel Ramirez.
“It was Delhi’s senior night and they’re the best team in the league.” The Hawks dominated with goals from Alex Gutierrez, Alejandro Aguilar, Javen Oropeza, Ivan Contreras Cervantes, Jonathan Aguilar, Manuel Rodriquez and Jonathan Valdovinos.
“I should’ve emphasized an even more defense game plan,” Ramirez said.
“The only thing that went well for us was in the second half when Moses Lopez and Mason Rivera made some awesome blocks and goal line clearances.”
The last time MCHS faced Delhi the Grizzlies outscored the Hawks in the second half.
“I think playing them at home in a 4-2 loss where we actually outscored them in the second half kind of had us expecting a different result,” the coach said.
“I think we were caught off guard when they scored in the first 45 seconds of the game, but really Delhi has great players and great coaching and they were definitely prepared.”
The Grizzlies played their final game of the regular season against the Hawks at Denair on Feb. 10.
Results were not available at press time.
After the loss to Delhi, MCHS held a record of 2-9 in the Southern League, leaving them in sixth place.
“Unfortunately, no playoffs for this team,” Ramirez said.
