The Vanguard College Prep Lions were the visiting team on the soccer field at Mariposa County High School on Dec. 9.
The Grizzlies boys varsity soccer team was tied up last week at the half, but things didn’t go their way.
MCHS lost to the Lions 2-0 when Santiago Rueda and Yosgart Pimentel each had a goal for Vanguard.
“I thought we played really well, that was a really fun game,” said coach Miguel Ramirez-Ruiz.
“That team made the playoffs last season and they’ve got some really good players.”
The Grizzlies showed improvement from their previous games.
“I thought we were a little more controlled tonight,” the coach continued.
“We made some personnel changes that gave us a little more stability in the back.”
It’s important to trust each other and know your role.
“Both of our center backs drop off because they’re used to covering for people,” Ramirez-Ruiz continued.
“That’s what hurt us today.”
The Grizzlies struck first against the Bulldogs at Le Grand on Dec. 11 during their first league game of the season.
Logen Brantley scored with an assist from Jhovany Marquez.
MCHS held the lead with 1-0 at the half but the momentum quickly shifted after halftime.
Le Grand made some adjustments and the Bulldogs were able to score three goals, winning the game 3-1.
The loss against Le Grand dropped the Grizzlies record to 0-4 overall.
Leading the team in goals so far is Bradley Southwood with two, followed by Brantley with one.
Marquez leads the group in assists with two, followed by Sawyer Malisch with one.
Freshman Mason Rivera has 35 saves as goalkeeper this season.
MCHS traveled to Waterford to go up against the Wildcats for their second league game of the year.
