After losing to Waterford, 2-0, on Dec. 16, the Mariposa County High School Grizzlies boys soccer team earned their first win of the season.
On Dec. 19, MCHS earned the W against Sierra with a final score of 3-1.
“The boys have been stoked to finally see the ball hit the back of the net,” said coach Miguel Ramirez.
“It’s nice to see our work be rewarded with wins.”
Bradley Southwood had a goal while Logen Brantley scored twice against Sierra.
Colton Truchess and Dylan Chun each had an assist with Mason Rivera had five saves in goal.
On Jan. 2, the Grizzlies earned their second win of the season and their first within league as they defeated the Knights from Stone Ridge Christian 2-1.
Jhovany Marquez assisted Brandon Naranjo for the Grizzlies fist goal and then Noah Eastwood assisted Marquez for the second goal.
“I thought we did okay coming from an extending break,” Ramirez said.
“We would’ve liked to have scored a few more of our chances.”
As Stone Ridge Christian didn’t have any subs during the game, the Grizzlies drew up a plan to wear them out.
“We tried to bait them into pushing their back line up so we could play more transitions,” the coach said.
“We wanted to wear them out a bit and rotate players to take advantage of the numbers.”
The strategy was successful and the Grizzlies were rewarded for their efforts.
“I think we’ve had four good games in a row, just the first two we didn’t finish our chances,” Ramirez explained.
“The boys understand what work needs to be done to be successful and I believe that’ll drive us to get better as a team and individual players.”
The Grizzlies hosted Gustine on Jan. 6 at MCHS.
Results were not available at press time.
Next up, the Wildcats from Waterford will be the visiting team at MCHS as they face the Grizzlies on the pitch on Jan. 13.
Game time is 6 p.m.
