League action began with a bang for the Mariposa County Grizzlies girls basketball team last week as they battled it out with Stone Ridge Christian.

MCHS faced the Knights on Jan. 2 in the Loyd Hobby Gymnasium where Kylie Hutchings solidified the win for the Grizzlies when she made two free throws.

MCHS came out on top by two points, winning 55-53.

It was a fun way to start league,” said coach Joe Lewis.

It was definitely one of those edge-of-your-seat games.

Hutchings dropped 17 points and 15 rebounds while Bailey Costa put up eight points and six rebounds.

Livie Twiss finished the night with seven points, including a three-pointer and 11 rebounds.

Celina Heard had six points (two three-point field goals) and seven rebounds for MCHS.

The game started slowly but the Grizzlies quickly adjusted and left it all on the court.

We wanted to attack the middle more and expose that they were leaving it open,” said the coach.

We were the better drivers as we continued to drive to the basket and finish.

Heard was a factor against Stone Ridge Christian.

She stepped in as a starter tonight and played some big minutes,” Lewis said.

She was a reliable scorer, ran our offense well and was in the right position.

Stone Ridge’s Bella Ewing dropped a double-double with 24 points and 12 boards while Tailynn Dungy scored 13 points.

MCHS is continuing to sharpen their skills.

We’ll keep working on setting up our offense and controlling the pace,” said Lewis.

The Grizzlies (1-0 in league) traveled to Chowchilla to face The Tribe on Jan. 5 before hosting Gustine on Jan. 6 at MCHS.

Results were not available at press time.

Next up, the Grizzlies will be the visiting team against Modesto Christian on Jan. 8.

It will be varsity only at 5:30 p.m.
