The JV girls basketball team at Mariposa County High School has been dominating just about every game they’ve played this season .
The grouped participated in the 15th annual Golden Valley JV tournament on Jan. 2-3 where they finished second out of eight teams in the tournament.
The Grizzlies defeated Golden Valley 41-38 during their first game and then they beat Summerville 48-35 during their second game.
MCHS lost the championship to El Capitan with a final score of 33-25.
“We played one player down,” said coach Tammi Richards.
“So we only had seven players available.”
The Golden Valley game was back and forth the entire game.
“Neither team was down more than three points at any given time,” Richards said.
This was the third time the Grizzlies had faced Summerville this season and the game was nothing but competitive.
“El Capitan played us in man the entire game and utilized 13 of their 15 players which kept them fresh versus our seven total players,” Richards explained.
“I was so proud of their effort and strong will to hang on and fight to the end.”
Even though the Grizzlies lost to El Capitan, the score doesn’t really reflect how close the game was.
“We struggled in the first and third periods, only scoring five points,” the coach said.
“That really hurt us. Our best effort on both ends was the second where we held them to two points while we put up 15.”
The JV team began league play on Tuesday, Jan. 6 against Gustine at MCHS.
Results were not available at press time.
“I’m so proud of this team,” Richards said.
“Our goal of course is another Southern League title.”
