With just a couple games remaining in the regular season, the Mariposa County High School Grizzlies varsity flag football team has already secured the title of league champs once again this year.

In a blowout 67-0 win over the Delta Charter Dragons last week, the Grizzlies remained in first place, undefeated at 8-0 within the Southern League.

We executed the things we were supposed to execute on,” said assistant coach Tammi Richards.

We didn’t ask for perfection but we asked them to focus on doing things the correct way.

The Grizzlies continue to focus on the details.

The goal is to run routes the correct way, make sure you’re running the correct plays and communicating to stay at the higher level,” Richards said.

The players hold themselves accountable and the way they approach practice and game day are what sets them apart.

We’re a good team,” continued Richards.

We do practices in the ways that we’re the ones who make us better.

The team remains at a high level no matter who the opponent is.

We practice hard like we’re getting ready for playoffs and we go in to each game like that team is the best team and we have to beat them,” explained Richards.

No matter who we play or what their skill set is, we’re still focused on what we want to do.

Even with two games remaining, the Grizzlies will be league champs this year.

No matter what, even if we lose our last two games we’re still league champs,” Richards said.

The team is still aiming higher and setting new goals.

We have the goal to be undefeated because they lost one league game last year and they wanted to beat that and not lose any,” said Richards.

The Grizzlies made the playoffs last year but this year, they want more.

We’re looking forward to playoffs,” Richards said.

They want to get past the first round because they only got to the first round last year.

Playoffs will be a challenge as the Grizzlies will face higher level teams than they’ve seen during the regular season.

Our league in all sports, we are a much higher caliber than the teams that we’re playing. Not sure why that is, it just is what it is,” said Richards.

It makes it a little harder on coaches to stay focused because when you get into playoffs, it’s not like what your league was all about during the regular season.

The team is focusing on the details and things they can control.

That’s why we focus at practice on things we can control,” Richards said.

We want to make sure that we’re at the highest level so we’re ready for what comes our way.

The Grizzlies (8-0 in league) traveled to Riverbank (5-3 in league) to face the Bruins on Oct. 21.

Results were not available at press time.

MCHS will finish the regular season against the Reds from Gustine (1-5 in league) on Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. on Grizzly Field.

The team will be celebrating their seniors as they finish their final regular season of flag football with MCHS.

The group will know more about playoffs as teams wrap up the regular season.
