The Mariposa County Sheriff’s office has confirmed that human remains were found near Agua Fria in July. Investigators are still waiting on laboratory DNA testing to determine the identity of the person.
Mariposa County Sheriff Jeremy Briese announced the discovery of the remains at the Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday.
“We are going to do the investigation thoroughly and that takes time,” Briese said.
Briese said he was focused on supporting the victim’s family members once the remains have been identified.
“These are real people, real families and we are going to work with them through that process before we make that public,” he said.
The remains were discovered July 26 on private property near Agua Fria, said sheriff’s office spokesperson Kristie Mitchell.
She did not elaborate on the circumstances of how the remains were discovered, provide any details about the location or the condition of those remains.
Mitchell said a citizen contacted the sheriff’s office after finding the remains in July.
She said the remains were not discovered as part of any active investigation or through a search warrant.
There are two women in Mariposa County who currently remain missing.
Crystal Blackburn,40, was last seen Dec. 29, 2023, in the Mt. Bullion area.
Barbara Barnett, 60, was last seen March 22, 2024, in the town of Mariposa.
Barnett’s daughter, Elisha Singh, told the Mariposa Gazette in a text message, “At the end of the day, the hardest thing is the not knowing.”
The sheriff’s office has said previously it doesn’t believe the two missing persons cases are connected.
