The Reds from Gustine were the visiting team in the Loyd Hobby Gymnasium last week.

On Jan. 28 the Mariposa County High School boys JV basketball team won 62-32 while the varsity team outscored the Reds 83-37.

For the first time today they played a complete game from start to finish,” said coach Frank Solis.

Not just during the game but preparation for the game like showing up on time, being dressed and ready to go and nobody forgetting anything.

After being fouled, Fabian Soto put the Grizzles on the scoreboard first by making one of two free throws.

Gustine answered with a three-pointer and Soto scored sunk a three-point field goal of his own.

Joseph Casner, Brady Martin and Ronan Davenport put the ball in the hoop during the first quarter.

Martin passed to Casner who hit a layup just before the buzzer to bring the score to 26-15 in favor of MCHS to end the first quarter.

The Reds went on to score six in the second before the Grizzlies got going again.

MCHS quickly adjusted and pushed their lead to 50-21 with just under two minutes remaining in the half.

Jason Carona launched a three-pointer for the Reds at the buzzer that went in.

The score was 56-24 for the Grizzlies at halftime.

MCHS kept the momentum going in the second half with points from Soto, Casner, Wilde Ketron, Noah Lilley and CJ Jacobs among others.

Alex Palomino hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for Gustine but the Grizzlies had already put an exclamation point on their win.

The final score was 83-37.

“Wilde (Ketron), Ronan (Davenport) and Colton (Wilha) played a great game tonight,” Solis said.

They played hard and did what I asked and they were successful.

The Grizzlies were 3-3 (4th place) in league after the win over Gustine.

We’ve got Stone Ridge this week, a lot of what we’re working on is going to be working their press game,” Solis explained.

We just have to work and try to find the holes and take advantage. They’re an aggressive team and they’re a big team and we have to work on winning rebounds.

The Grizzlies traveled to Stone Ridge to spar with the Knights on Feb. 2.

Then the team was back home two days later on Feb. 4 when they hosted Waterford at MCHS.

Results for these games were not available at press time.

With just a few games remaining in the regular season, the Grizzlies will travel to Delhi on Feb. 6 to face the Hawks.

JV will take the court at 5:30 p.m. followed by varsity at 7.
