Some familiar faces, as well as a few new ones, are back on the mats at Mariposa County High School.
The wrestling team is in full conditioning mode as winter sports began last week for the Grizzlies.
The first week has consisted of running, circuit workouts and a whole lot of conditioning.
“We’re trying to build that endurance,” said coach Marquis Roberson.
“We’re focused on stance and conditioning as well as body positioning and some basic fundamentals.”
Coaching with Roberson this season are Nathan Tomlin. Jerry Lura is the girls coach and volunteers are Keenan Seymour, Jennifer Lobaugh and Alicia Petretti, among others.
This year, the girls division is now its own separate division in the Southern Atlantic League.
“Last year every girl made it to divisionals as long as they made weight,” Roberson said.
“This year, each one of the girls will have to wrestle to get to the next tournament in the same way the boys do.”
Last year was a successful season and the group is looking forward to continue building where they left off.
“I’m really excited about the wrestlers who are coming back and increasing their skills,” the coach said.
“This is a good year for them to push themselves and make it to masters, as well as our senior females to make it to masters.”
Seniors on the team this year are Faith Lura, Atticus Yu, Val Huerta and new to the team this year: Reese Evans.
Other members of the team include Braxton Vecchiarelli, Kaleb Stewart, Evalyn Lobaugh, Lillie Cook, Tristan Delgado, Lucca Petretti-Meek, Mason Stappenbeck, Jaysea Whitmire, Joe Walker, Allen Wilson, Nathan Lura, Sophia Forga, Wyatt Lockett, Kayne Hahlbeck, Arturo Lozano, Tristan Delgado, Jacob Griffith, Eamon Fluharty, Harlen Dunn, Xzavier Romero, Brittany Vargas-Alvarado and Cody Collett.
