As spring sports are back in action, the Mariposa County High School track and field team has begun practicing and conditioning.

Returning to lead the team this year are coaches Adrian Perez, Becky Potter Good and Bruce Cole.

Potter Good is working with the distance runners while Cole is leading the throwers and Perez works mainly with the sprinters.

The track and field roster has noticeably grown this year.

We have about 48 kids this season,” Perez said.

Last year we only had about five girls and we’ve increased that quite a bit.

With the restructuring of the league this season and also an increase in participants, MCHS aims to be more competitive this season.

With our size and the athletic ability of these kids, I think we’re going to be very competitive this year,” Perez explained.

I think it’s going to be a tighter competition between us, Denair and Delhi; the scores will probably be a lot closer.

Many athletes who compete in track and field events plan to compete at a higher level in college while others are cross training for other sports.

My goal as a coach is to prepare them to compete at the college level,” said Perez.

A lot of the kids don’t have track as their first love but we support that too to help with other sports.

The Grizzlies roster is set and includes Alejandro Alvarado, Angel Guerrero, Brady Martin, Braxton Salas, Brian Zamora, Caden Lindsey, Wyeth Bothwell, Connor Filgas, Daevon Poindexter, Daniel Specht, Dominik Mull, Eamon Fluharty, Elias Gutierrez, Enea Cinerari, Guido Hernandez, Hunter Marlin, Jameson Fournier, Jazion Adkins, Jeremiah Jackson, Joseph Casner, Joseph Salazar, Joseph Walker, Julian Moreno, Kayne Hahlbeck, Keegan Rieg, Liam Davis, Lyell Marcis, Mason Sinclair, Nathan Lura, Nathiah DelGrego, Owen Arnold, Owen Ellison, Rusty Bull, Sam Harveston, Tristan Delgado, Wyatt Lockett, Alayna Sandoval, Alison Wolf, Annie Bryant, Arliana Coy, Aurora Martella, Brittany Vargas, Cali DelGrego, Cora Grasso, Dana Munoz, Emelia Williams, Faith Lura, Juniper Helling, Karina Jacobo, Katherine Rieg, Kelsea Coder, Marley Gediman, Nailea Alvarado, Juno Pike, Tania Marquez and Zoe Johnson.
