League action kicked off as the Mariposa County High School varsity baseball team hosted the Denair Coyotes on March 4 at MCHS for their first league game of the season.

The Grizzlies lost to Denair 4-1.

Ben Lingenfelter spent all seven innings on the mound for MCHS.

Over 105 pitches, Lingenfelter had eight strikeouts and only gave up one earned run while allowing three unearned.

Barclae Sandoval, Laten Butler and Braydent Getty each had one stole base while Ez Weiland had one hit and one run for MCHS.

Now that we have everyone, getting them to jive as a family and finding their identity as a team is going to be big for us,” said coach Josh Collins.

The Grizzlies showed much improvement defensively after falling to Yosemite on Feb. 28, 11-1.

Friday against Yosemite we were horrendous on defense,” Collins said.

Today we were making plays and doing well, so it’s just about finding consistency.

MCHS struggled to get things going at the plate against Denair’s pitcher, Kaden Prine.

We came in with a plan and lost sight of that as the game went along,” Collins said.

He’s a great pitcher and he’s tough but we have the capability to win ball games.

James Rogerson made several key plays at third base.

James was phenomenal tonight,” the coach said.

Seeing that defensively is exciting to see.

Butler was a factor at short stop while Lingenfelter stayed consistent on the mound.

Ben continuing to throw strikes and finish out the game,” Collins said.

That was really awesome to see.

The Grizzlies were scheduled for a rematch against Denair on March 6, but that game was rescheduled for May 1.

MCHS traveled to Golden Valley on March 10 for their final non-league game.

Results were not available at press time.

With a record of 0-1 in league, the Grizzlies hosted Waterford for more league action on March 11.

Results were not available at press time.

Next up, the Grizzlies will travel to Waterford to take on the Wildcats for a second time on March 13.

Game time is 4 p.m.
