It’s been an exciting start in league action for the Mariposa County High School girls soccer team this season.
With four games in the books so far, two of which have been league games, the team has had three ties and one win for a record of 1-0-3.
“It was great to break our streak of ties with a solid win,” said coach Katie Pike.
“The girls are really learning to work together and trust each other on the field.”
After getting their feet wet with a tie against Big Valley Christian on Dec. 2, the Grizzlies met the Reds on the pitch in Chowchilla on Dec. 5 where they also finished in a tie of 1-1.
League action began on Dec. 11 for MCHS when they went up against big time rival Le Grand on the Bulldogs home field.
Freshman Whitney Marcis scored the team’s lone goal while Izzy Remington had seven saves in net.
Natalie Elias recorded a goal for Le Grand.
Marcis and Alicia Garcia, both freshmen, have stood out as the teams goal scorers so far this season.
“They both are outstanding players and have helped us with scoring and controlling the middle,” Pike explained.
“Another freshman who has stood out is Pheobe Davis. She is a solid defender with great skills.”
After the match with Le Grand, the Grizzlies traveled to Waterford to face the Wildcats on Dec. 16 for their second league game of the season.
After battling on the pitch, MCHS got their first win this year with a final score of 3-1.
Marcis and Garcia were the goal scorers for the Grizzlies.
“We adjust our play depending on how the other team is playing,” Pike said.
“We are just tweeking the structure depending on what is needed against each opponent and it’s paying off.”
As schools head into the holiday break the team plans to continue working on “trusting each other and communicating on the field.”
The Grizzlies faced off against the Sierra Chieftains at MCHS on Dec. 19.
Results were not available at press time due to early deadlines during the holiday season.
Next up, the Grizzlies will host the Knights from Stone Ridge Christian at MCHS on Jan. 2.
Game time is 4:30 p.m.
