The Nov. 3 general election ballot just got a little simpler for Mariposa County.
The only contested local election will be for District 1 Mariposa County Supervisor between Lisa Edelheit and Stanley Bissmeyer.
Last week Edeleheit, the primary winner, was endorsed by incumbent Supervisor Rosemarie Smallcombe, who is not running for reelection.
There will be no contested election for the three open seats on the John C. Fremont Healthcare District Board of Directors after Dr. Joseph Rogers formally withdrew his name just 30 minutes before the deadline.
It means the three people who filed for the three open seats on the board — John Wurl, Teresa Johnson and Rob Fox — will fill those positions.
The race will not appear on the ballot.
Wurl and Fox were appointed to the board earlier this year to fill vacancies. Fox will be fulfilling a partial two year term. Johnson and Wurl will have full four-year terms.
Rogers said he withdrew his name from consideration because he said the other “candidates were adequate,” a phrase he did not intend as faint praise.
“We cannot afford to stumble like we have the last four years,” said Rogers of the healthcare district, which last week announced a letter of intent to enter into a partnership Oak Valley Healthcare District in Oakdale.
Dr. Rogers, a pediatrician, served on the district’s board for eight years and served twice as Chief of Staff at John C. Fremont Hospital.
Rogers was waiting at the county elections office Friday evening to see who the candidates were who filed. Satisfied with the candidates who signed a sworn affidavit, he formally withdrew his name.
He said the district is at an inflection point.
“If we don’t get it done now, it’s never going to get done,” he said.
There are several other uncontested races that will also not appear on the November ballot.
Robert Morse will retain his seat on the Mariposa County Unified School District for District 3 while Kim Monson will represent District 1 in an uncontested race.
For the Mariposa Public Utility District (MPUD), Frank Mock, Gordon Dulcich and Deboraha Cade will serve as directors.
Timothy McGinty will continue to serve as director of the Yosemite Alpine Community Services District (YACSD).
Mary Smith will become a director of the Lake Don Pedro Community Services District (LDPCSD).
But if you are feeling like there isn’t enough to study up for come November, fear not. It’s California. There will be 14 propositions on the ballot ranging from a billionaire tax, voter ID, taxes, housing and healthcare.
