Once a year, the American Indian Council of Mariposa County (AICMC), also known as the Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation, organizes a traditional Native American celebration.
This year, the 30th Annual Mariposa Powwow, Chi-Tock-Non Kote-U-Pu, which means “Spring Celebration”, will take place over Mother’s Day weekend on May 10-11 at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds.
The theme this year is “Honoring New Life.”
This celebration is a drug-free, alcohol-free, weapon-free, smoke-free event which is open to everyone.
It’s important to note, no dogs are allowed at the event this year.
People travel from near and far to attend this highly anticipated event.
There will be contest dancing, drums, crafts, exhibitions, food vendors and much more.
Vendors come from all over, some have even been coming since the very beginning when the celebration began in 1994.
There are many styles of dance contests which will take place as well as drum contests.
Some of the dance categories this year include Family Team Grass Dance, Grass vs. Chicken and Cradleboard Dance, Mens Traditional Special 18-plus and much more.
With a large number of cash prizes up for grabs, it’s sure to be a weekend to remember.
Gates open at 10 a.m. both days of the event with the Grand Entry taking place at noon.
